Dozens of public schools in New York City that lease buildings owned by the Roman Catholic Church must take students off site for sex education, the New York Daily News reports. Although state and city laws require sex ed and lessons about HIV/AIDS, church officials said they are within their rights not to allow such instruction on their property. In 2005, the city started renting space for public schools from the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn. In 2013, the city education department will pay more than $27 million in rent for 40 public schools housed in parochial school buildings.
